What is a Machine Control System?

A machine control system consists of hardware and software installed on construction equipment such as excavators, loaders, bulldozers, graders, and other earthmoving machines. It accurately determines the machine's position and orientation while guiding both the machine and its moving components to predefined locations and design surfaces.

A typical machine control system includes:

  • A GNSS receiver that accurately determines the machine's position and orientation.
  • Motion sensors installed on the machine's moving components to measure horizontal and vertical movement.
  • An in-cab display and controller, where the project design is loaded and all positioning and guidance calculations are performed.

Once installed, the system provides the operator with real-time guidance, indicating exactly how the machine should move horizontally (left/right) and vertically (up/down) so that the working tool—such as the bucket or blade—reaches the required design position.

Throughout the project, the operator can monitor progress on a 3D model, viewing completed work and the remaining excavation or grading required to achieve the final design.
